Frequently Asked Questions
Can I drive the Apache Trail in a large RV?
The paved section from Apache Junction to Tortilla Flat (18 miles) is passable by most RVs but has sharp curves and steep grades — know your rig's limitations. Beyond Tortilla Flat, the road turns unpaved and narrows significantly. Fish Creek Hill is a particularly tight switchback descent that is NOT recommended for rigs over 20 feet. Most RV travelers do the paved section and turn around at Tortilla Flat.
What is Lost Dutchman State Park like for RV camping?
Lost Dutchman State Park is one of the best RV campgrounds in the Phoenix area for scenery. Sites are in the shadow of the Superstition Cliffs with saguaro-studded terrain. Full hookups are available and the campground has good facilities. The Jacob's Crosscut and Siphon Draw trails are accessible directly from the park. Book 3–4 months ahead for October through March weekends.
Is Goldfield Ghost Town worth stopping at?
Goldfield Ghost Town is a commercially reconstructed 1890s mining camp — not an authentic ghost town but entertaining for families. It has a narrow-gauge train, mine tour, zipline, reptile exhibit, and the Mammoth Steakhouse. Plan an hour or two. It is 4 miles from Lost Dutchman State Park on SR-88 toward the Apache Trail. RV parking is free in the lot.
