Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Cottonwood better for large RVs than Sedona?
Cottonwood's Dead Horse Ranch State Park accommodates rigs up to 40 feet with full hookups in a pleasant riparian setting. Sedona's canyon roads and trailhead parking limit most rigs to 20–22 feet and have no hookups. Cottonwood is 20 miles south of Sedona on US-89A — an easy drive in a smaller vehicle or rental car. You get the full Sedona experience without the stress of navigating a large RV through narrow canyon roads.
What is the Verde Valley Wine Trail?
The Verde Valley Wine Trail covers 12+ Arizona wineries in a 20-mile corridor along the Verde River between Cottonwood, Cornville, Camp Verde, and Clarkdale. Arizona Stronghold and Merkin Vineyards (Maynard James Keenan of Tool) are among the most visible labels. The wineries are generally open Thursday through Sunday with tasting rooms. The combination of 3,200 ft elevation and volcanic Verde River alluvial soils produces wines distinct from both the Willcox and Sonoita appellations.
What is Tuzigoot National Monument?
Tuzigoot (Apache for 'crooked water') is a Sinagua pueblo occupied from 1125–1400 AD on a hilltop overlooking the Verde River. The pueblo had 110 rooms when occupied and housed approximately 225 people. The visitor center displays artifacts excavated from the site and a reconstructed room provides scale. The hilltop trail is 0.3 miles with views of the Verde Valley and Mingus Mountain. Tuzigoot is significantly less visited than Montezuma Castle despite similar preservation quality.
