Frequently Asked Questions
Can I swim at Tonto Natural Bridge?
Yes, and it is exceptional. The natural travertine bridge spans a crystal-clear green pool fed by a spring. You can hike down to the pool (steep trail, 500 ft descent) and swim under the arch. The water stays at 75°F year-round. The park is day-use only with limited daily entry — arrive early in summer and on weekends. No camping inside the park.
Is Payson better for summer camping than Flagstaff?
Payson is a step down in elevation (5,000 ft vs. 7,000 ft for Flagstaff) but significantly closer to Phoenix (90 miles vs. 145 miles). If you want the shortest drive to escape Phoenix's summer heat, Payson is the answer. If you want the coolest temperatures and the most mountain scenery, Flagstaff wins. Payson's pine forest and Mogollon Rim views are legitimately beautiful.
What is the Mogollon Rim?
The Mogollon Rim is a 200-mile-long escarpment across central Arizona — a dramatic cliff edge where the Colorado Plateau drops 2,000 feet to the lower desert. SR-260 east of Payson runs directly along the Rim with multiple overlooks. The Rim Country is prime elk and mule deer habitat with good wildlife viewing in fall. The Rim Lakes Recreation Area has several developed campgrounds along the top.
